Get to Know Katherine, Our Yoga Instructor!

For many of our participants at Yvonne's Fitness, Katherine is a familiar face. Yvonne & Thomas's youngest daughter, she has grown up with our Zumba and Yoga community. Attending countless Zumba events since she was a child, she's been a part of our group since the beginning - and now, she's become part of our instructor team! Katherine has done some virtual Partner Yoga classes with the Yvonne in the past, and after deciding to get her Yoga teacher certification, has come on board to teach our in-person yoga classes at the Lindenwoods Community Centre. Though she has learned a lot from her mom, Katherine also brings her own unique style to her classes. We are so glad to have her on the team!

KATHERINE AS A YOGA INSTRUCTOR

How long have you been practicing Yoga?

I’ve been doing yoga for a very long time. Since I was a child, since my mom has been teaching - so, for most of my life.

What motivated you to become a Yoga instructor?

My mom definitely motivated me to become a yoga teacher. I’ve always enjoyed yoga but never thought I would be teaching as a job. I wanted to start putting my health (mind and body) as a priority and it's something I practice daily.

What do you enjoy about Yoga as a student? As an instructor?

I enjoy learning more about poses and different wording. I enjoy being a student because I don’t have to think, I just listen to what I’m being told and can focus on my practice. For teaching yoga it’s helped me be more aware of my body. When cueing I try to be descriptive but also give information I think would be useful to know. I like structuring my classes and doing poses I enjoy the most. I also like to start off my class with an opening meditation to prepare ourselves for the class, and maybe even set an intention.

What was your first Yoga experience like?

I honestly don’t remember my very first one. But one experience that stands out to me is when I would ask my mom to teach me poses before bed and she would stay beside me in final relaxation and I would always fall asleep on the floor.

If you could give one tip to a brand new Yoga student, what would it be?

To not compare yourself to other students or the teacher.

What is (one of) your favourite Yoga poses and why?

One of my favourite poses are the warrior sequences. I actually used to hate doing warrior sequences, but I’ve grown to appreciate them. I feel very peaceful and strong when I practice these poses.

KATHERINE OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

What is your day job?

I'm in my last year of high school, and currently my plans are to attend university and get a degree in kinesiology. After that I want to become a physiotherapist. Although these are my plans now, I think they will probably change in the future.

What are some ways you like to spend your free time?

I love to read and watch movies and TV shows. I also like to workout and practice yoga by myself a couple times a week.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Hawaii or Vietnam. These places are both beautiful but I am most interested in their cultures and their food.

What are some words you like to live by?

Have courage and be kind. - Cinderella

Who is one of your female role models and why?

I would say my biggest role model is my sister. She is beautiful, selfless and very smart. She is my best friend but also my biggest teacher. She is always honest with me and speaks her mind. She inspires me to be open with others and have courage in myself.

Tell us three fun facts about you.

  • I used to be a dancer and gymnast.

  • My favourite animals are hippos.

  • My favourite foods are steak, soup and cheesecake.
